Volvo's Multi-lock System Prevents Drunk Driving

by Steve
Monday, August 22, 2005

Volvo Multi-Lock SystemWith Saab already developing an in-car breathalyzer, Volvo released details for its own version.

With Volvo's experimental multi-lock system, in order to start the engine, the driver must first blow into the built-in breathalyzer lock. If the breathalyzer records a negative reading, AND if the seatbelt is fastened, the car will start.

In addition, Volvo developed a special programmable key that can be used to set a maximum speed limit to restrain lead-footed teens.

  • I'm 17 and if my parents gave me this car I would be pissed but I think when I kids, given our family history of alcoholism, I might just give them a car like this. GREAT idea, if made a requirement in the future, would save thousands upon thousands of lives

  • what will happen when the people who drive intoxicated just use the passengers breath to start the car. Ex if the driver has a little kid with him whats going to stop him from using his childs breath? other than that i still like the idea that car companies are trying to prevent this problem, their are way too many people out there being killed by drunk drivers

  • Um.

What if it's a family car?

What if you want a friend to spell you on a long-distance drive?

What the heck do you do about valet parking?

    EWWW.

  • Volvo's in-house development may be new, but interlocks are actually quite common and on the road today. In King County (Seattle), WA some DUI offenders are ordered to put an interlock device on their cars to avoid a license suspension.

  • What if... What if....

    chill people.

    oh, here's one

What if you start drinking after you blow AND it's a really long drive? Well, it's no good then.

  • the people above have made a good point. There are a million ways around this device, it will soon become a hassle. Imagine having to blow into a device EVERY time you want to start your car. This would be a great system if it were mandatory for people already stopped for a DUI but placing it in every car is overkill.

  • "what will happen when the people who drive intoxicated just use the passengers breath to start the car. Ex if the driver has a little kid with him whats going to stop him from using his childs breath?"

i have to imagine that there is a substantial number of potential drunk drivers who will not drive drunk if they first have to force their child in the passenger seat to cheat a breathalizer for them.

and how many people on long drives have ever asked their drunk-ass friend to drive for a few hundred miles so they can get some sleep while their crazy drunk-ass friend almost kills them...

anyway, it's obviously not perfect, but it does call the driver's attention to the fact that he's drunk, so he can maybe reconsider his decision to drive.

re: valet and germs, i'm sure they're thinking up something.

  • Nowadays changes come so fast with development of new technology that people are so fascinated with what has been developed that often times they don' always realize what it is used for. Big companies or whoever develop a new product and run with it. The next thing you know people are enamoured with the new technology asking how they ever lived without it and before they know it the world has changed. Often times nobody slows down to ask why we would even need something that's been developed; is it for the better good of everyone or for a select few? When new technology is given the general publics kudos to run rampant by their thumbs up approval you learn later on that the backlash is that people start to complain their rights have been stepped on. Well open up your eyes and look before you leap. This technology sounds best for "Prosecuted DRUNK DRIVERS" and "Wild UNCONTROLLABLE Teens Without SUPERVISION or COMMON SENSE" I don't feel its for all teenagers or all people who drive. I would think it would be hilarious to see everyone who ever gets in a vehicle to drive to have to blow first. I think the statistics of drunk driving are horrible and I dislike hearing when someone was involved in an accident. Sometimes though it just feels like people step over the line with restrictions in daily lifes order of things and nobody says enough is enough. Anyway just one opinion out of what approximately 6 Billion.

  • Here are some one-up what ifs.
What if you take a drink and the terrorists anounce that the building has a bomb in it and your car is in the buildings guarage and you try but its no use boom! Can you sue?
What if you are at a party and some people have been getting weird or worse Ann Coulter gets in your face and you have to wait two hours befor your f'n car will start and you get mugged or raped or have Ann coulter in your face!
    For two hours!
    Can you sue?

  • When are we allowed to speak? How many times are there accidents involving deaths without alcohol involved? When someone is careless and wreckless driving? Like the joy riders? How many of them have they killed? I guess there are no numbers on that because no one wants to know the truth! Careless drivers, wreckless drivers, joy riding drivers and inexperienced drivers cause all alot of accidents too. Why doesn't the law take away their licenses? What happened on the highway the other day? High speed and black ice! How many died? None of it had to do with alcohol! We can not blame everything on that. Just our own stupidity and lack of driving skills! Placing it in every car is a joke! Why punish people for something they haven't done or for something they may or may not do? What about the elderly? What if they can't blow into it and there is no one to help them start their vehicle? What if? Not all accidents are caused by drunk drivers. What about the people who speed, drag race and everything else? It guess that's okay? Are they not endangering us and ours? Why don't we put a lock on their gas pedal? What if they kill someone or something because of their stupidity? What happens if they are not paying attention and they kill someone? I guess a hit and run is okay! I have children also and I worry about all of the drivers, not just the drunks!

  • Acording to the Journal of the American Medical Association the leading causes of death in the year 2000 (the latest figures available) show alcohol consumption the third highest cause of death in the country at 85,000 deaths; 3.5%. Motor vehicle deaths make up 43,00 of those deaths. The economic cost of alcohol abuse is estimated to be $70.3 billion for the year 1985 again the latest figures available.

Obviously alcohol abuse is a major problem and when that abuse takes place behind the wheel of a 3000 pound vehicle the damage often involves innocent people.

This product is a great idea not just because it would save lives and money but because it would force many abusers into treatment. It is estimated that about 10% of the population of the US are chronic alcoholics and many more are well on their way. Those people often reject help for years causing untold problems for the social and health systems of the country.

Have you ever noticed the cars in the parking lots for taverns and bars and wondered how those people get home? How many people have a drink after work or during a social event and then drive home? How many of you know an alcoholic that is in denial and driving? Think about these things and then think about this product.

  • Anything that stops drinking and driving and forces teen drivers to stick to the speed limit has to be better that the alternative.

  • You guys do realize that these systems are not for ALL cars, right? They will only be applied to the cars that require a breathalyser by a judge. Volvo is doing this because on their cars, you can't install an old style start inhibit system since the starter is now controlled over the CAN bus; thus, this system must be developed for those who own Volvos that are required to have a device like this installed.

  • Luckily these devices are easy to circumvent. Drunk driving laws are stupid.
