The Memory Maintainer

by Steve
Wednesday, November 09, 2005

This little contraption keeps your car's clock and radio presets from getting reset when it's battery gets changed.

When you take your car into the shop to get worked on, you plug a 9-volt battery on to the Memory Maintainer, and then plug it into a cigarette lighter. No more having to reprogram everything!

$15.95 at AutoSport

  • hardly a life saver this one is it!
Think of all the wonderful activities I'm missing out on whilst re-setting my clock after a service.

  • As a former technician at a dealer, I can tell you these don't usually work. 9 volts is not good enough for most modern cars.

Depending on the kind of work being done on the car, it's better not to use one of these. Sometimes it is good to 'reset' the ECM (computer) after certain type of repairs.

I have found that a 12-14.4v battery from a power tool works much better.
