LG Steam Washer

by Steve
Thursday, December 15, 2005

LG Steam WasherLG Electronics yesterday featured their new SteamWasher™ with remote monitoring capabilities at the company's 2006 preview event in New York City.

It's like a washing machine that uses steam instead of plain water. It has an extra large capacity drum (4.0 cubic feet) so that you can wash more clothes at once, and it uses much less water thanks to its steam technology. It can also freshen up clothes by removing wrinkles and odors in just minutes, without having to go through the whole wash cycle.

It's also enabled to work with LG's Remote Monitoring Laundry System, allowing users to monitor cycle progress while they focus on other activities around the house, like little junior getting into trouble.

Suggested retail price is between $1,499 to $1,599, and should be available in the Spring of 2006.

  • What about shrinkage due to the steams heat?

  • The LG Washer and matching dryer are just great appliances. The washer uses both water and steam as you choose. The steam feature will clean, refresh, and remove wrinkles from clothes without chemicals and solvents. Can't beat this!

  • I just got this system. Not as exciting as I expected. The steam cycle is 20 minutes and does little to reduce wrinkles.

Both the washer and dryer needs service already (purchased 6/18), the washer needs a new circuit board and the dryer has defective rollers that cause the startup to be very loud.

  • I've had the steam washer now for a couple of months and I find the steam wash a complete waste. It does not do as advertised. The clothes are damp at best and not hot at all. It does NOT get wrinkles out of the clothes.

  • I must agree with everyone, the steam feature was a big disapointment. I sent a email to the support department to ask about the steam cycle operation because it did not force steam into the washer as advertised. Support admits the demonstration video was enhanced. I love the washer but if I had to do it over, I would not purchase a washer with the steam option.

  • I love my LG Steam Washer. The steam fresh cycle does exactly as promised, although 100% cotton is a little damp (it says this in the manual too). I had never expected this washer to clean my clothes as well as it does. Not only does it work well, but it also looks sexy.

  • The steam cycle does not shrink your clothes because of the time (20 minutes) and actual tub temperature (40 Degrees).

  • I got LG Steam washer & Dryer from HomeDepot on Last Nov. 11, 2006.
The Steam fuction does not work like it was shown on TV. There is just a little steam coming out w/ little heat. The steam fresh fuction doses not do the worl like it said on TV.

  • I bought the LG washer & dryer in white and the color of washer and dryer are different whites.. washer as white-white and dryer a grey-white... home depot refused to replace. A lot of money for something that dosn't match.

  • It's always a good idea when something new is foisted on the public to wait until the wrinkles are ironed out - this is true of appliances, food products, surgical procedures, EVERYTHING! Wait around a while and they get the fine-tuning done and also the price comes down.

  • I just went to about 6 stores, and I purchases the red set at Frys tonight for the best price of all the other stores, I went to. I am excited because this is a big sacrifice for my family and I am praying it is worth the money.

  • Just ordered my LG steam washer and steam dryer. Got big discounts at Home Depot during TX no tax weekend during Memorial Day weekend. Sure hope I am more satisfied than most of the comments already left on this site cause I spent all my money on them.

  • I don't have the steam washer but I have the LG front load washer and dryer and am completely disappointed. The washer needs a new circuit board already. Thank Goodness for the extended warranty. I won't buy this brand again.

  • Soon I will be in the market for a new washer and was interested in the steam washer. After reading some of the comments, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. I'll research this feature a bit more before I decide.

  • So glad I found this page. I too am having second thoughts about spending BIG $$ for a big disappointment.

  • Save your money. It's more expensive, the cycle takes 3-4 hours MINIMUM, the steam cyle does NOT get rid of wrinkles, refresh your clothes, or save on dry cleaning. The biggest downside is that your clothes ALWAYS come out with wrinkles. I've read the manual and tried tweaking every possible setting (more/less water, more/less dry time) and my clothes always come out with DEEP wrinkles.

  • extremely disappointed with the LG Steam combo. the dryer seems to work alright *knock on wood*, but the washer, although does do an excellent job of washing and conserving water, the steamfresh cycle is complete garbage! LG "Life's Garbage" engineers had to know this cycle did not do nearly what they advertise it to do, but yet decided to sell it anyways...thats korean manufacturing for ya! if its electronic and from asia, don't even think of touching it if its not Japanese. Korean and Chinese electronics are pure garbage, as is the case with many having mainboard issues with their wash machines and dryers. good thing i bought the extended warantee, its not like LG's tech support is worth a hill of beans...they are useless as t**s on a boar!

  • Purchased the white LG Steam washer & dryer....these units can be stacked or side by side they are rather tall stacked if you are 5.2 like me. The steam is being used along with water during most wash cycles. I do not have a real opinion about the steam yet. YOU DO NEED TO READ THE OWNERS MANUAL and there is maint. with the washer such as draining water from a tube regularly, wiping glass and gasket seal at the end of last cycle and leaving the door ajar to let the washer completely dry out. I have washed all my throw pillows, refreshed a couple comforters and washed a few dry clean only items succesfully. There are some really long cycles but for the most part the dryer is always dried before the washer is done which is huge for me since I used to have 2-3 clean loads sitting in baskets waiting to be dried with my previous washer and dryer. Hope this post helps. I purchsed from SEARS using there price match and bought an extended warranty lets hope I wont be needing it. SEARS.com has over 25 reveiws on this LG product. All in all I was not fond of spending close to 2900.00 on a washer & dryer w/ warranty but they have made my life a little easier.....

  • Purchased a LG steam washer/dryer and I regret it alot. First of all the steamer as many others say DOES NOT REMOVE WRINKLES, THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASON's I PURCHASED THIS. Another downfall is the washing machines have terribly long cycles and do not use alot of water which is horrible because they do not rinse well. I actually have to rinse my whites with bleech 2 times in order to get the cholorine smell out. Another thing is that the clothes do not COME CLEAN STAINS DO NOT COME OUT. I go through gallons of shout to remove stains and clothes have to be re washed. I have tried everything. My husbands work clothes have to washed twice sometimes, he is an electrician. Please note THAT WHEN I HAD A REGULAR WASHER I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE. ALL STAINS CAME OUT OF CLOTHES AND RINSED EXTREMELY WELL. The only pro's to this washer is that I can wash large amounts of clothes at once, and its looks pretty thats truly it. Save your money and go traditional look for a super extra large capacity washer and dryer which is what I had before and loved it. But I wanted the LG washer/dryer because they looked great and I truly regret it. Buy traditional you will save money and be much happier.

  • Purchased a LG steam washer/dryer and I regret it alot. First of all the steamer as many others say DOES NOT REMOVE WRINKLES, IN FACT IT SET THEM INTO THE FABRIC. It is so difficult to iron now I just can't understand it. THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASON's I PURCHASED THIS. Another thing is that even when I don't use the steam cycle the clothes still come out pipping out. So hot I can't even handle them. I have tried everything. My husbands thinks I don't know how to work it correctly but I have read the booklet and I am doing everything right. Please note THAT WHEN I HAD A REGULAR WASHER I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE. All I would do was wash and then hang dry my stiff and then just iron them right out. I now have to bring my stiff to the dry cleaners just to get the WRINKLE out and I even use special stuff to help with the WRINKLE.

  • The cycle on steam does not take 3-4 hours. If you do SANITARY the maximum is 2 hours, read your manual. If you clean the part where blanket stuff gets sucked in, and clean the windows of the washer and dryer, you will get more out of the washer! Take care of it and it will perform!

By Blogger The Flying Monkeys, at 2/28/2009 07:17:00 PM

  • I too am disappointed with the steam cycle. It doesn't take smoky smell out of clothes that you've worn to a bar/club the night before, and does not take out wrinkles. I've had more luck with that just throwing a damp towel in the dryer with something wrinkled. The washer is already (purchased 3/07)starting to squeak a little when rotating, and I don't have an extended warranty. Dreading service call when this gets worse.....I'm leaving these behind when I move next year as an "enticement" and buying new NON-STEAM models for the new house!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3/10/2009 02:21:00 PM

  • If you want to remove wrinkes and just refresh your clothes, just pop them in the dryer at high heat for five minutes (Not too long or they will shrink!) with a wet towel!

  • LG Steam Washer & Dryer are garbage!! I have had the washer replaced once already and on my new replacement already having major problems. Clothes are to wet and come out smelling. Won't even get into the steam and wrinkles. Yes! I use the tablets for cleaning the drum and even bleach on occasion. I always leave the door open. Still have a bad smell and I am on public water. I empty mildew smelling water from the drain which I was told I didn't need to do. The first one I had leaked water and also dumped bleach a couple times that was left from a white wash. Not at all impressed! I am downright mad expect better quality. The dryer is also a major disappointment. Had that serviced. It would never dry the smelly clothes. It took forever and I mean forever. Energy Efficient what a joke. I was told it was the dryer vent not the dryer. Paid $600 to replace venting system only to have the same problem. Sears came out the other day and couldn't find any problem with my venting or even its product but will replace a part on the dryer just in case. Well here we go again. I will have to waist another day or two to get some to address the problem with these over priced luxury washer and dryer that stink! To expensive to walk from. If problem doesn't get resolved I will take it to the top. I will take legal action as this is not acceptable. LG and Sears shame on you!

  • Bought the LG steam wash/dryer tonight and just found this post. I am considering cancelling my order!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5/25/2009 08:01:00 PM

  • all of you should be aware that LG manufactures OEM for all the major brands, like whirlpool, ge, maytag...
so if you put down the steam function on one brand and praise it on another its kind of silly. they are the go-to manufacturer even for our domestic manufacturers

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6/30/2009 01:30:00 PM

  • I would advise everyone to read the manual and do your research. The Steam function is there to refresh clothes, not to give your perfectly pressed clothes. Example: You find you long lost shirt but it is crushed in your closet so bad you know a iron wont do. For this the Steam Cycle is perfect to hit for a quick steam/no wrinkle option, then iron. No washer replaces an iron!

The dryer is great as it senses how dry your clothes are, I'm sure I have saved hundreds of dollars in clothes that used to shrink because I would get busy or mis-judge the time.

Steam issue aside the washer is very quite and has an extreme spin rate. Literally you can't even see the clothes spinning. For me it has cleaned better than any I have owned and it certainly uses less water.

Obviously looks are an A+, I got blue matching with the lift/utility drawers underneath to hold detergent etc.

Would buy again in a second, owned for a year with no problems.

  • Great thread - it'll be another lost sale to LG from this guy and but yet another victory to poor korean ingenuity and quality. LG: Life's Goong

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10/13/2009 05:16:00 AM

  • Wow I can't believe how many people are complaining about these washers!!! I've never had any of these issues and on the comment that the steam doesn't even make the cloths hot..that's very surprising to me because when I open mine steam still pours out of my washer & cloths feel like they have already been in the dryer from the heat. In fact it was warm enough for me to warm my hands. The smelly problems could be partly due to the public water, I have a well and never leave a wash sitting in after the end of cycle. My washer smell perfectly fine!
