OxiClean Laundry Bombs

by Steve
Tuesday, January 31, 2006

OxiClean Solid Laundry Detergent 3 Piece KitOrange Glo International, Inc. introduced its new OxiClean Solid Laundry Detergent 3 Piece Kit, or what my wife would dub, "the laundry bomb".

The 3 piece kit consists of two hardened balls of OxiClean laundry detergent, and one fabric bag. You put a ball into the bag, and throw the bag into the washing machine. Then you dump all your dirty clothes into the washing machine as well, and run it. When the laundry is done, you pull the clothes out, but leave the "ball and bag" in the machine. It's good for 40 loads.

No more worrying that your teenager might pour too much liquid detergent into the wash!

Orange Glo had this product on their website earlier in the month as evidenced by Google's cache, but it they took it down. The cache page says it's good for 25 loads, yet the product data report I have here says 40 loads.

I suppose it would have really been "the bomb" if the bag were big enough to hold both balls. You could go to the laundramat and ask to borrow someone else's sack of balls, and say stuff like, "Ooooh, your balls smell like lemons!".

74 Comments:

  • At the bottom of the cache page, it states:

"*[25] When washed in warm water. Number of loads may vary with wash temperature. OxiClean Detergent will last up to 40 loads when washed in cold water."

    You're both right!

  • Just a thought, but if this is a slowly-eroding solid chunk of detergent, what happens during the rinse cycle? Conventional detergents are rinsed out at this stage.

  • My wife’s been using it for month and she says that it 's total BS. It won’t last more then 5-6 loads with normal warm cycle. She's been told that it would be good at least for 20 hot temp cycles.

  • this product is fantastic. I have done so far 10 warm loads, 3 hot loads and 3 cold loads and this laundry ball is still quite large....my guess would be that I will be able to do atleast 16 more loads. All my warm loads were extra large...the cold and hot were small/meduim loads. Just go off the phone to order more of this product.

  • where can i get one???

  • I just bought 2 oxiclean laundry balls at the Toronto Home and Garden show plus bonuses for $25.
As I was driving home I wondered whether one had to remove the ball for the rinse cycle. Well I just did 2 loads and removed the ball after the wash cycle. Otherwise there would be detergent and perfume in your clothes.
Also the ball should last twice as long. But it's a pain to remember to remove the ball. Do the clothes get clean? I'm not sure yet.

  • I too purchased the laundry balls at the Home Show in Toronto and to date have used it for a minimum 25 loads I do mostly cold washes. The ball is still quite a significant size and the clothes come out very clean and no need for a fabric softener. Also no need to take it out for the rinse cycle. No residue is present.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4/03/2006 08:13:00 AM

  • I also bought the balls at a home and garden show. I didn't even get 15 loads from one ball and can not remove it from a front loading machine before the rinse cycle. I am sure that is why it desolves so rapidly. I am looking for the detergent in powder form but as yet have not found it. It cleans well but is VERY EXPENSIVE

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4/18/2006 08:20:00 AM

  • I just bought this from a free trial offer they had at http://www.oxicleandetergent.com/offer/ and have the ball in my laundry - so far I've done 11 loads and it's still working. If you get the free trial you just pay shipping of $5.00 or so...

  • Can you use the laundry balls with HE washers?

  • Can you use the laundry balls with He washers??russ54

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6/21/2006 04:37:00 PM

  • I to bought this at show. I got four balls + 2 bags for $32.00. I have used it for 5 warm loads and 2 hot water loads. It is still quite large. I had washed a pen by accident with my whites and it took out all the stains no problem. I love it and can hardly wait to see it on the market.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7/10/2006 08:06:00 PM

  • Yes you can use it in HE washers

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7/10/2006 08:07:00 PM

  • Removing the Oxiclean ball from its packaging is not for the physically challenged. Removal of the packaging requires brute strength!!! The detergent cleans really well, but requires another rinse after the washer has gone through its cycle. I feel the ball is a pretty expensive alternative to other laundry products.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7/17/2006 10:36:00 AM

  • Just received the $4.99 free offer from the Company. Ball is about 1/2 gone after 8 loads (I have a front loader). HOWEVER - Baseball pants that were soaked in oxyclean and Tide and still stained came out clean on first run. Laundry is exceptionally soft and very few wrinkles. Big Bucks but in some cases worth it.

By Anonymous shellie klink, at 7/21/2006 06:58:00 AM

  • They were selling these at the Wisconsin State Fair for 4 balls and 4 bags + the Oxy clean Versatile in a tub for $21. Guess I got a deal. Haven't tried it yet

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/11/2006 07:21:00 PM

  • WE BOUGHT AT THE OHIO STATE FAIR FOUR FOR $21. HAVE WORKED WITH THE PRODUCT ON A NUMBER OF AREAS.
I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD BLEACH IN WITH THE BALL WHEN IT GOT SMALL FAST?
WE ALSO WASH ALMOST ALL PRODUCT IN A FRONT LOAD AND ON COLD SETTING. WE ALSO USE THE DRYER BALLS IN THE DRYER (THEY WORK GET).
SO ALL IN ALL I THINK WE ARE GOING TO SAVE MONEY.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/14/2006 08:26:00 AM

  • Just received my detergent ball and have done 2 loads of laundry (one in warm water & one in cold water) the ball is literally half the size it was when I got it. At this rate, I will be lucky to get 5 loads out of it.
I don't know if the part of the country you live in and type of water make a difference, but if 2 loads reduce the size by half... it's not worth it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/22/2006 10:39:00 PM

  • I was extremely skeptical of this product, but decided to give it a try. I have very soft water and needed something ultra low-sudsing for large loads of bath towels, which hold onto suds unmercifully in my front-loading washer. I really love the detergent ball! It cleans very well and somehow doesn't leave a detergent residue on the clothes. They feel as soft and clean as they ever have. Most importantly, it produces only a negligible amount of suds. Problem solved!

Convincing people it won't leave detergent on your clothes is going to be the main obstacle for this product. I am somewhat skin-sensitive to detergents and the OxiClean ball causes no problems for me.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/25/2006 06:49:00 AM

  • I just purchased 4 balls each with a soft pouch and a container or oxiclean . I paid 22.oo. Anyone paying more is getting ripped off, due to the promotions on this product right now. Just go to the oxiclean website and they are selling them for a rate equal to what I paid, anyone else selling for more on package deals is pocketing a profit and hurting oxiclean!!! as for some of you who are claiming that your balls are going fast, there are variables. Are you all using the bags with them if not that's a reason they would go too fast, also are you doing second rinse cycles, if so, you don't need to with this product. Also they product stays in all the time, you don't fish it out after the wash cycle, that's the whole revalutional idea behind this product, put it in and forget about it until it is the size of a golf ball and then replace it. If the ball is nmot lasting as long as it's supposed to then you are doing something wrong, and remeber temputre is a variable , so if all your loads are in hot and warm ater thenm it will go faster, and you cannot use it without a bag or dispenser, whichever it comes with, as there atwo different types of dispensers to date.

  • GO TO GREATCLEANERS.COM
GET THERE PHONE NUMBER CALL AND GET THE RUBBER BALL FOR THE SOAP. THE PRODUCT WILL COME WITH A NEW BALL OF SOAP AND THE RUBBER HOLDER FOR THE SOAP.
THEN SOME OF THE SHORT RUNS WILL BE LONGER ON THE BALLS.
WASH ALL YOU CAN IN COLD WATER. IT DOES JUST AS WELL IN COLD AS WARM WATER. IT WILL SAVE YOU SOME BUCKS.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8/31/2006 11:34:00 AM

  • COLD WATER IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE 25 PLUS RUNS WITH THE BALL.
WE USE IT WITH THE KIDS UNIFORMS AT SCHOOL AND IT DOES A GREAT JOB OVER ALL.
WE DO LOOK AT EACH PIECE AND IF NOT TOALLY CLEAN IT RUNS IN THE NEXT LOAD WITH A LITTLE OF THE REGULAR OXY POWDER.
YOU KNOW FOOTBALL AND GRASS STAINS!
I HEAR THAT THE CLOTH BAGS ARE THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE GOOD FOR A COUPLE OF BALLS. THE RUBBER REPLACEMENT AT GREATCLEANERS.COM WILL RUN FOR 150 PLUS LOADS. THAT SLOVED PART OF OUR PROBLEM WITH THE SHORT RUNS ON THE BALLS.
WE STARTED WITH THE BAG AND SWITCHED TO THE RUBBER HOLDER AND IT MADE A DIFFERENCE.

  • I have had this ball for 5 weeks. I bought it for the $4.99 shipping cost. I have a family of 5 and wash at least 8 loads a week. hot warm and cold. My ball is now the size of a handball. My clothes are soft very clean and I love the product! I can't find it in any of the stores in San Diego. I guess I got a good ball :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/06/2006 10:41:00 PM

  • I have washed a good 40 loads at all temps. and I still have a small ball left. My clothes are so soft and clean. This is a great product. Don't take it out of your washer, leave it in at all times. That is the best part you never have to think about laundry detergent again. I'm looking to buy more, that is why i'm on this site. Have fun washing

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/06/2006 10:52:00 PM

  • Ok in my search to find out more about the oxi ball I have found out a couple things that I see as recurring questions here, and some observations I have made. First is that do NOT use bleach with the ball, if you read the package it says not to. Second is most people who have front loading washers are finding that it doesn't last as long there is a site called www.retro-housewife.com/oxi-clean-detergent-review.html She has a front loader and maybe can answer some of your questions. Third warm water seems to be the case in making the ball smaller quicker. Cold water washes on darks and lights discluding white's, towels, and undergarments get cleaned just as well if not better than on a warm cycle.

  • I just found this at Target in Tulsa. It was 5.99 for the starter set. It also had a 1 dollar coupon on the package to use at the check out so made it a great price. There is also a 2 dollar off coupon in the package for the refills. They carried that too for 7.99. I already use cold on almost everything and really like this product. I also use dryer balls cause hubby hates the smell of any dryer sheet. They work great too.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/17/2006 11:53:00 AM

  • I bought this new product, and much to my surprise the clothes come out as dirty as when put in the washing machine!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/19/2006 11:42:00 AM

  • I bought 4 balls and a tub of OxiClean for $30 CDN. I've done 20 loads and there is still a lot of ball left.

    Some points to consider:
    - I used mostly cold water washes
    - I have an old top loader. I believe the agitation is quite rough.
    - I wash large loads in a regular capacity washer
    - I always use the gentle cycle (a shorter cycle with less agitation)

With so many variables affecting the longevity of the ball, it's hard to tell if the ball is a good deal for you.

With regards to cleaning, it seems the same as the leading brands. It's hard to tell for me because my clothes are usually not visibly dirty.

Colours don't fade as much, and there is little residue.

All things considered, I would only buy the ball for dark clothing. It's expensive.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9/22/2006 11:19:00 PM

  • I would also comment that there is no logic to why there should be more detergent used for warm washes than cold washes. But this is what happens when you use the Oxiball - it dissolves MORE in warmer water, longer cycles, greater agitation, etc. You can't control the amount of detergent used - the design is flawed.

    By Blogger Allegra8462, at 9/22/2006 11:23:00 PM

  • I have the version with the ball in the cloth bag and then it is placed in the rubber ball. Have done about 5 loads with Warm wash/Cold rinse. Ball is about the same size as when i 1st got it. Clothes smell nice when done but i am convinced that my Tide liquid detergent does a better job. After playing beach vBall, my chothes get downright dirty. After the ball.. it's still somewhat dirty. For average soil levels this is fine.. but stick to Tide if you want a super clean load.

i use this product and it was a waste of my time the stains were still in if you ever think of getting this donttrust me

  • I Just purchased my first Oxy ball and so far I love it! My first load was whites (you know the stains that men can leave) well, to my astonishment, the tains were all gone and I did not use bleach. My clothes smell delightfully clean and fresh, and it is still the same size. I did peek into my washer to see if it sudsed any, and no, not much suds but you could tell that these was a detergent in the washer, and it did smell wonderful. very lemony!
I wash mainly in warm and cold water, so it my Oxy ball lasts for 25 loads, well, I feel that I have gotten well my moneys worth. I feel the price is very reasonable, and if you haven't tried it, YOU NEED TO TRY IT FOR YOURSELF! Don't take anyone elses word for things until you try it for yourself. I have told all my girlfriends and they rushed right out and purchased one for their laundry also. They, to this date, are very well pleased. I do not have a problem, I have normal stains and it works wonderfully.
TRY IT--YOU'LL LIKE IT. I support this all the way, and then some!

  • I just purchased some of the Oxi Clean balls at the Toronto National Woman's show - we got 2 double packages - with him telling us it is 200 loads worth - but now upon reading it - I see it is only 25 loads per ball so we really are only getting 100 loads from it for $30 bucks!!
and we got a container of Orange Clean and the information on the bottle is all printed in Japanese!!! so I have no idea how to use this product even now!!
    any suggestions would be appreciated

  • I bought the oxiclean ball used if for 2 weeks and I broke out with big sores all over my body anywhere my clothing had been. Rest of the family was fine, but if you have sensitive skin I would stay away from this one.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11/08/2006 03:40:00 PM

  • Wish I had read all these comments before I bought mine today. I'm not sure I even want to try it now. My youngest daughter has extremely sensitive skin so I don't want to take any chances. Phooey. :(

  • Oxiclean laundy bombs are just that.
My clothes came out looking dingy and not clean. When I called Orange-Glo and spoke to a customer service rep,
I asked for a refund, she was the rudist women I have ever came in contact with. She said I would have to have a receipt, of course I didn't after 2 months. The CSR certainly had a bad mouth on here, was very disrespectful. Her attitude has turned me against all Orange-Glo product, No more hoax from you

  • this little forum isn't much help.people seem to really love it or really hate it.i have just started my first load so i'll find out which group i'm in.i've been told that lots of suds don't matter but suds are what i'm used to and the fact that there are no suds whatsoever or anything remotely resembling a bubble does concern me.(i've heard of low suds but not no suds)has anyone found it works better after the 1st or 2nd load?maybe it needs a break-in period?

By Blogger Heather, at 12/19/2006 06:15:00 PM

  • how did that work out for you? I got a coupon for a free starter kit and am doing my first load with it. I'll post when it's done, hopefully my clothes are clean. I also use a laundromat, so I'll have to take the ball out. Does it melt or explode or something if you remove it from the machine? *laugh*

  • I too was confused about the Bag and the Blue Rubber cover. I put the ball into the bag and then into the blue cover....was not an easy job!! I did get about 30 loads washed with it, but our clothes are not usually visably dirty so I can't say if it cleaned or not. I think I'm going to try putting the ball into the blue cover only, not use the bag. I really don't know what the bag is for, wish somebody could tell me.

  • Just brought the product yesterday and am very surprised and very pleased!Have wanted to try it for a long time and each time I started to purchase it either from the net or Walmart would get leary and change my mind thinking I don't want to waste my money or this is just another gimmick. Well yesterday as I was headed for the checkout at Kroger I saw the Starter Kit for $4.99 and the refill kit for $6.49! Both products were being discontinued. I of course purchased both thinking I can at least try it and if it dosen't work take the refill kit back. Well let me tell you I have done 4 large loads of various types of wash using warm or cold just to test the product and as I stated before am just totally surprised! The clothes are clean, smell good and feel very soft and not wrinkled without the use of a fabric softner sheet (this was found out by accident because I forgot to put one in with the first load, and then decided to do a test). I was a little skeptical when it came to my white and light colored towels thinking my wash is proably not going to come out clean but I bit the bullet and just to be on the safe side put a scoop of the Oxiclean detergent in as well and eveything came out great. I just hate that it took me so long to try it. Oh and by the way the ball did not disovle as quickly as someone stated it did. It is still almost as large as it was prior to the first use. I will continue my testing but as of this time the product is a winner.

  • I bought the oxiclean balls at the Toronto National Women's Day Show. The rep said the balls would last 2x as long since I'm using a high efficiency washer. They lied!!! Washing in cold water, the balls lasted only 21 loads. They don't get rid of stains better than the average generic detergent. Also the balls don't leave your laundry smelling fresh. I'm sticking to my Tide detergent.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2/05/2007 10:23:00 AM

  • I've been using the Oxiclean Balls for a while now, and they do seem to last longer if you wash in cold water. My husbands and my own sensitive skin has no problems, and they are easy to use.

They get his clothes clean - he works in the dirt all day, and welds during the heat of summer. The clothes smell great, and the color stays true.

Now, if they could only come down in price, things would be perfect.

  • I love the Oxiclean balls. I have used up two already. My only problem is finding the replacements without purchasing the entire set again. Where can I purchase individual oxiclean balls?
    My laudry always smells wonderful.

  • I have been using my balls for two
months now averaging about 15 loads per ball and am pleased with the results.
My question is where do i get more balls to refill my bag.
I can't find them in the stores or online where do i go?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3/29/2007 02:13:00 PM

  • I bought the ball with the bag and rubber ball container on clearance at Walmart in Michigan. I have sensitive skin and was afraid to use it, but I did and it has left my clothes very soft and clean. No skin reaction either. I use mostly warm water wash and cold water rinse, it has lasted for many, many loads. Oh, and I leave it in for the rinse cycle just as it says to. It is now at the "refill" size and I can't find them anymore. Does anyone know where I can get them?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4/06/2007 10:11:00 AM

  • We have been using the Oxi-clean balls since purchasing the first ones at a Home show here in Tampa nearly two years ago. We had used the product previously and were delighted to have the balls. The net bag was annoying so we were thrilled when the plastic cover came out (though it looked like something a toddler should play with, not for the laundry).

We have been trying to find replacements for just about a month now. We have tried a couple of other detergents in the past few weeks without the success that we had been seeing with the Oxi-clean detergent. We had gotten out of the practice of having to "spot" each item before washing and were enjoying the new found "freedom".

A couple of people have mentiond findingi the product on clearance sales. That coupled with the lack of mention on the company's website sounds to me like it has been discontinued.

I really hope that we are going to see a "new and improved" product that will take the place of our Oxy-clean balls on the horizon very soon.

As for the concern about the balls being in the rinse cycle.... my thought is that there would be nothing for the detergent to react with once the agents in the dirt and stains have been rinsed away. A bit like the difference between pouring peroxide over an open wound or just pouring it over your skin....nothing happens until there is something there for it to react with.

Help Oxi-Clean folks -----we need you!!!

  • I bought 3 balls for $30 at the Toronto Creative Festival and after one hot and one warm wash the ball is only about one third its original size? At this rate i'll be lucky to get to 5 loads, let alone 25!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4/22/2007 07:03:00 PM

  • Not impressed, it seems like an expensive alternative to laundry liquid. I'm sorry I spent $30 on it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4/22/2007 07:05:00 PM

  • I have been using the ball for 2+yrs and I love it!! I just found out that it had been discontinued... so sad, I only bought maybe 3 a year. Oxiclean said to keep calling and requesting the product back. And to everyone that cleans with warm and hot water, there is now need to. Detergant is ALL tempeture cold works just the same as hot well actually better. BRING BACK TOSS-N-GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5/23/2007 11:27:00 AM

  • I was so excited to buy one of these. They sent me the fancy version that came in a blue rubbery ball (I guess to protect during the rinse cycle). My biggest complaint is that it DOESN'T REMOVE STAINS!
Sure it makes your clothing smell clean, but so dues spraying it with perfume. If you can't remove stains, don't call yourself detergent.

  • I was fortunate enough to find the oxi-ball as a close out product at a local grocery chain. I bought the starter kit, 2 ball, cloth bag, and blue rubber container. I was also able to buy 2 refills (each containing 2 balls). The product is awesome! Very little sudsing but it cleans great. Clothes come out clean, soft, and fresh smelling. I love not having to buy extra detergent. I always use cold water wash. I've done about 10 loads and have noticed very little decrease in the size of the ball. Great product. I'm trying to find where I can find more for friends as they don't seem to be available in stores. Do you need to take it out in the rinse??? We don't need to know how electricity works....it just does. Thanks!

  • I bought the sample pack and 2 refills. The one in the sample pack lasted about 30 loads which was great. The one in the twin pack lasted only 5 loads. I never change the settings on my machine so I am thinking the sample pack was to get you interested then they hit you with the not so good refill packs. I was excited with the first one and it did work great. Now this is upsetting.

  • The guy at the New York State Fair said that it will be out in stores again soon under Arm & Hammer...I don't know it that means that they sold their idea to A&H or what.

Just thought I'd pass that bit of info. along to those who like it.

  • Big lots in Indiana has the starter packs or refills for just $2.00. Has anyone tried using the ball without the white bag on it?

  • I bought my double pack at linens and things for $10.00. I got 2 balls 1 sock and 1 blue rubber thing. I love it. I get about 30 loads per ball. I use cold water wash but extra large extended wash. So as far as i'm concerned I got a great deal.

  • I purchased my Oxiclean Ball @ a Big Lots store in St.Cloud, MN for $2. We wash our clothes in cold water. This Oxiclean ball was able to wash my greasy restaurant work shirts with no problem! My only concern now is how to purchase additional refill balls?!

  • I just bought the product at my local Big Lots store for $2 for the starter kit and $2 for 2 ball replacements. For $4 bucks I get 3 balls and it says all together 75 loads. Used it once and everything was clean and no film. Trying to find reasonable places to buy replacement balls in the future yet oxiclean's website doesnt have it online anymore.

  • Hello everyone,

My name is Minerva, and I live in Michigan. Oxiclean has discontinued the Oxiball product. I ask for a request to marketing but the young lady refuse to put a request in for me. I loved this product. My husband work in a Heat Treatment plant which his uniforms are oily, dirty, and smelly. I normally buy it in bulk amounts. It was the only solution than mixing up a tub of soap powder w/ oxiclean powder to clean his uniforms that did not leave powder clots on clothes. So, I am sad about this product being discontined from the market.

  • I too, purchased the OxiClean balls at a local Big Lots (in Delaware). 2 balls for $2.00, and 1 ball with one blue rubber holder with cloth bag for $2.00. I liked this product so much that I went back and bought 6 more 2 ball sets, and another with the holder. (For a spare) I get at least 25 loads with one ball...and I use warm water with a cold water rinse in an HE front load washer with excellent results!!

I have always sworn by Oxiclean products and am saddened about not only the balls being discontinued, but the powdered laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent being discontinued as well. Why stop manufacturing such good products?! :(

I hope one of the previous posters is correct about Arm & Hammer coming out with a similar product!!

  • I love my oxy balls, from the comments I am seeing, I think maybe if you have a top loading machine you get issues.
I have a front loader and have an oxy ball that I got over a year ago, I have a 12 year old boy and a teenage girl. Both in Sea Cadets we have lots of dirty clothes and after a year I have just finished the left over tide that I had when I bought the ball. For the $15 I paid for the 2 balls I have probably saved about $300 in detergent, not had detergent in my house or the environment. I will say we wash cold hang dry as well and I havne't bought bleach all year either.. I am looking to buy more incase I run out as I gave the second one to my mom... if you are trying to compare them to detergent DON'T.. its using science, not chemicals.. there is no residue as it's a chemical process.. not rocket science just not something that gets rinsed out.
