Memorex FlashDisc USB

by Steve
Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Memorex FlashdiscThey're called "FlashDiscs", but they're not really disks. It's a just a Flash memory chip, made to look like a disk.

Memorex claims that their new product is meant to be a high-density alternative to floppy disks, though I'm thinking that the few people still using floppy disks don't have an USB port to alternate to.

Anyways, the company says these colorful 16Mb alternatives have 10 times the capacity of floppy disks, and can hold up to 40 digital photos, or up to 15 minutes of MP3 files.

Seriously, the whole marketing approach on this is cost. You can buy a package of three for $19.99. Though I'm still left scratching my head and thinking, "huh?"

  • 48MB for $16.99. Expensive, at least in my eye.

  • Maybe it's "the Flash Drive that you give away!"

  • Forget using any USB ports next to the one you pop this wide ride into. Unfortunate for most notebook users or anyone with recessed or rear-mounted USB ports as they will be sold in packs of 3 and not come with a USB cable.

  • I feel sad for the folks who get suckered into buying this.

  • Many public libraries are still inundated by floppy disk usage on public access computers. These people come in with their resume on floppy, might not have a job or own a computer. This is the digital divide. Many libraries sell a floppy disk for about $.50, but end up with headache after headache dealing with stuck or damaged disks and we know they don't hold enough. These 16mb drives are a step in the right direction for this need...

  • As an instructor in basic computing, these are perfect for student files and cheap enough to give them away. (3 for $9.95, not $19.95.)

They have solved a big problem for me - burning CDs is beyonfd the ken of beginners, and floppy drives are no longer present. These are more than adequate for all our course student files.
