Folgers Stomach-Friendly Coffee

Folgers Simply SmoothGet ready for a new category of coffee - stomach-friendly.

Proctor & Gamble introduces "Folgers Simply Smooth", claiming to be the first nationally available stomach-friendly coffee in the United States. They say that some 35-40 million Americans have decreased or eliminated their coffee consumption due to weak stomachs.

Or could it be just bad coffee?

So, what makes it stomach-friendly? They say they use a special selection of coffee beans, and then roast it under a carefully monitored process. When the beans reach a certain color, they halt the roasting process. This is supposed to reduce the levels of gastric-irritants.

Folgers Simply Smooth will be available in medium-roast regular and decaffeinated varieties beginning in May 2006 at mass merchandisers, grocery and drug stores nationwide.

  • If you're drinking Folgers, I can see how this would be a necessary product. It's genius actually. Folgers creates a problem with one of their products and fixes it with yet another one of their products. Vertical intergration baby!

  • Isn't there already a "stomach-friendly" coffe, brand name of Kava. It's acid-free or acid-reduced.

  • St Louis hopes people discover www.gentlejava.com that is the original stomach friedly coffee which is used by millins and really works. Try it. I now drink coffee again.

  • the description of "halting the roasting process when the bean is a certain color" is how all roasting is done, provided it's not in some huge folgers factory. also, lighter roasting is typically described as more acidic, though there is no difference in the ph. maybe... drink better coffee instead?

  • I could of used this today! This afternoon I had some maxwell house coffee that I normally drink and my stomach was churning. I find I have to drink coffee with a food or I will regret it.

  • Well,I happened to pick up someof this new Folger's variety to experiment and it seemed to cause much less acid stomach sensation than the other varieties of Folger's I have recently tried ( I wish I could afford to get my coffee beans from Peets in Berkeley, but I can't...so I get what I can find on sale, usually folger's or maxwell house. The stuff at WalMart which my neighbor buys is awfully acid producing, in my experience. (Despite my limited income I will not buy a button at WalMart due to their many unethical practices.)

  • I absolutely love coffee, but can no longer drink it. I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and this has ceased all of my coffee drinking. If I ever drink a cup of Joe, then I will be running for the nearest bathroom. Maybe I will be able to drink this Folgers Stomach-Friendly Coffee. I'll know if and when I need to run for the potty. I guess we'll see.

  • Why not drinking Espresso? I guarantee it tastes better than this stuff and its stomach friendly because the stuff in the coffee which causes the heartburn cannot come through because of the fast brewing method.

  • I have a pretty serious stomach problem that has precluded fruit or spices for about 2 and 1/2 years now. About 1 year ago I started drinking Kava. It's a great drink and definitely very low acid though I think the term coffee is a bit misleading given the flavor-- tasty but not coffee.

  • I'm an authorized vendor for Hevla coffee who's trying to get my site off the ground. Hevla is a low-acid coffee with a patented process that extracts the acid to make it easier on the stomach, without losing the taste. I'd like to offer the first 3 people to e-mail me a free 1/2lb. of Hevla coffee in return for a review and a link to my site. It can be good, bad, or otherwise, and it's completely free, so there's nothing to lose. If you're interested, please send your name and address to mbaird20@gmail.com

  • folgers is inferior in taste to kava. been drinking kava for 30 years.

  • I've not tried kava, but I've always had a problem with coffee being hard on my stomach. I tried Folgers Simply Smooth and I love it. It doesn't taste quite as good as regular coffee.. but once you get used to it it's great and I can drink a whole pot and go all day without any stomach problems at all.

  • Just to let you know ... I am a Coffee-holic. But, I havnt been able to drink coffee for the past 2 yrs because it tears my stomach up. They just started selling the new Folgers "stomach friendly" coffee in my area and I went straight to the store to buy it and try it out. (I made sure I was at home for this little experiment). Loved it ... and NO stomach problems!! I can live again !! YEAH !!

  • I don't know what happened to my other comment that I made but I will be happy to write it again. I tried Folges' Simply Smooth decaf in July because of tummy troubles. I too have IBS. This coffee is absolutely delicious and my tummy has never been better!! Love it! Love it!

  • I tried this after seeing an add and have made it my only coffee. I suffer from GERD and Barrett's Esophagus, but love the taste of coffee. Even with my medication other coffees bothered me, but this is GREAT. I have had to give up so many things, at least now I can enjoy a cup of coffee.

  • I am a medical student, so needless to say coffee is the base of my food pyramid. However, I also suffer from gastric reflux due to the fun times I had as a "younger" man, and since I have been drinking massive amounts of coffee since August my stomach was beginning to resent me. I have even had to switch my caffeine fix of choice from coffee to Red Bull. But, my uncle who suffers from pancreas problems recommended simply smooth so I tried it. I must say that it is everything it is cracked up to be. It is definitely easier on the GI tract. The taste is slightly lacking (with normal Folger's arbitrarily rated at 10 I would give the simply smooth a 8.5). The caffeine content seems to be slightly decreased, but with the easier effect on the stomach one should be able to drink more simply smooth to acquire their daily intake of caffeine. Not a perfect product, but definitely a great product (especially for coffee drinkers with GI problems) at a reasonable price. All in all, I think I have found my new coffee that will help me get that top residency!

  • After being diagnosed with a Hiatal Hernia that led to my GERD, I, too, had to cutback on my coffee consumption.

I have tried Folger's Simple Smooth and it does work very well. From time to time, though, I will add one spoonful of 'darker roast' for every three of Simply Smooth just to boost the flavor. I seem to tolerate it pretty well.

Simply Smooth is a very good product. I am glad I did not have to give up coffee entirely.

  • THIS COFFEE IS GREAT. MY BOYFRIEND AND I HAD BEEN TRYING TO FIND A REASONABLY PRICED, GOOD TASTING COFFEE WHEN I HAPPENED UPON THIS. NOW I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE IN THE STORES, BUT DID ORDER IT ONLINE. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU TRY IT. ENJOY!
