The Healthy Handle allows grocery shoppers to push around a shopping cart without having to worry about getting germs on your hands.
A recent study showed that the two most germ-ridden objects in public places were the mice at internet cafes and shopping cart handles. Both were more germ-ridden than the average public toilet. So this isn't such a bad idea.

I would like to see a handle that has a saran wrap on it. The wrap could be ripped off with each new customer. Sort of like the sanitary toilet covers that roll back after each use.

They should make these for the Gym.

Just lick your fingers after touching the handle is probably a better idea.
dude, germs have been around for ever. it's a shame that I get sick immediatley when I go to India or Africa, just because western buisness makes money by spreading fear of harmless germs... this kills your immune system!
tell me one germ they found on a handle I have to be scared of as a healthy person?

Hey, Not everyone is as healthy as you. Thank God for your health. Young babies and oldsters are especially vulnerable. People like me with cancer will tell you about catching other peoples germs. Did you read the health page on the website?

You may want to call me I hae 4 proto types of your handle I invented 4 years ago. Thank You Mike Caldwell Fresno CA ph. 559-642-6081, w. 559-2552363

I can see that these would be useful for people with HIV or who are undergoing cancer chemo or who are taking anti-rejection drugs and who really can't expose themselves to germs. Otherwise these people are holed up at home 24/7 so it's nice to have devices for people in these circumstances.
Otherwise, though - isn't it just a bit too much to worry about?

I just received my healthy handle, and I'm very pleased. I have health problems and have to be very careful what kind of chemicals I'm exposed to. There are a lot of things in wipes and they can absorb into your skin. So, this invention was a god-send to me.

Great idea. My mom has a low immune system and this would be great for her. She always uses wipes to hold the cart. Cool invention.

The problem I see with these is that you're having to haul around this plastic handle in your purse. After you remove it from the shopping cart, it will have germs on the underside of it as well as the germs you've tranferred to it after picking up items, touching money, etc.
My local Albertson's has open bottles of clorox wipes so when you come into the store you can wipe off the cart and when you're leaving you can grab another to clean your hands (they have trash cans near the bottles so you can throw the wipes out when you're done). I think I prefer using the wipes as opposed to carrying around a plastic handle.

This product was "invented" in Canada by a woman who wanted to avoid germs. She was selling the product in 1998. Maybe it didn't take off but this is not a new idea. It's doesn't hold much merit. First of all the bulk of carrying the telescopic handle in a purse or backpack -- forget it -- the plastic will splinter or worse the germs that you avoid will have deposited themselves on the inside of this thing and you'll be putting it back into the purse or carrying bag you brought with you.
Better idea use the antibacterial wipes supermarkets are now to clean off shopping cart handles. Or bring some with you and then dispose of them right away.

GET OVER IT! Why oh why do we have such a fixation about germs. We are covered in them and by actively reducing their numbers, we are putting our health at risk. IF you have an immune problem or IF you have a health issue regarding bacteria you take the precautionary measures necessary, but can we stop with the fear tactics to make us all think we are going to drop dead tomorrow.

normally dont comment on comments but tired of these so called know it alls that dont make any sense and bypass fact for whats real if your going to comment about medical terms lets see your medical background I know what is fact because im a surviving cancer patient and you can get deathly sick from contaminated surfaces this person who invented this product has done everything right from his patent which he dose have to the real medical facts that he has posted on their web but what impressed me the most is he has given a real effort to address a real problem my best wishes and
thank you to his effort please read his web to see the facts before bashing this fine product BILL D.

I have an invention it's called gloves
By , at 8/30/2006 01:37:00 PM
I think the inventor has many facts that has swayed my thoughts about using their product but 3
things stick in my mind after reading the posted comments
1 alot of people could care less about me or my familys health
2 if wipes are so effective why do we have to throw them away.I think thats a quote from a comedian, what do they know
3 And the one that made up my mind to spend 10.00 comes from the inventor << EVERYONE WONT USE THE HEALTHY HANDLY AND THATS EXACTLY WHY YOU SHOULD >>

But..what if the handle cover gets germs on it? With you need a handle cover cover?
By Chicken, at 10/02/2006 12:04:00 AM
Chicken let me try to answer your remark
First I am a registered nurse and a mother of 4 I also take care of my 72 year old mother. I truly understand germs(viruses, bacteria)
So listen to what i have to say ,The germs that my family generate within the confines of our household are handled well with our own immune systems,NOW heres the real problem maker .When other peoples health problems are added to our system that causes unexplained sickness that our body has trouble with.So the key is to avoid other peoples contamination as much as possible.Shopping carts are one of the worst because of the number of different people that use them. This product is dishwasher safe which I do with my nightly dishes.I quit using anti bacterial wipes years ago. The Healthy Handle is not misleading in any way and should be included as your protection from shopping cart handle contamination.Another thought for everyone to remember . 80% of all contagios illnesses are transmitted from coming in contact with contaminated surfaces .Hope this will help when you consider your familys health.

When you fold it up, the bottom of the larger parts touches the top of the smaller parts, so as soon as you unfold it again you're touching the germs and bacteria that you were protected from before. Unless it comes with some sort of self-cleaning mechanism for when you fold it up, it is virtually useless for its intended purpose.
It could be handy though for people with arthritis who have trouble holding very thin trolley handles, and could stop you from cutting yourself if the handle is damaged.

I have recently been directed to your site and my compliments to you. I have enjoyed reading the comments both good and bad and I have come to the place where I would encourage anyone who is interested in The Healthy Handle and how I came up with its design and how I addresed all the issues
asked in the previous comments to please contact me at the web site. I will be glad to call you personally to answer your questions. I'll start by addressing the last comment. First let me congratulate the author on their acknoledgement of how contaminated shopping cart handles are. It seems that is where their education ends and where my research began. On addressing the problem of cross contamination of surface to surface there were many contributing factors and I chose the best material and design to address that problem. Without taking up more space here, I will make myself availible for your questions. To answer the question about cleaning the Healthy Handle, it is dishwasher safe and we recommend doing so after use. Thanks for your interest.

this really shouldnt be labeled as a "strange product". It is actually very sensible and practical. I'm doing a research paper for my Microbiology class and the bacterial numbers on shopping carts are appalling. A study conducted by the Korean Consumer Protection Board showed that on average, a shopping cart had 1,100 colonies of forming bacterial units per 10 square centimeters while a public bathroom door knob had only 340 units.

Yeah I guess this is a good product if you are paranoid. (Like that commercial where the mother is frantically Cloroxing every surface/object in her house.) I don't really go around thinking "Oh my god the germs!" I usually just wash my hands after grocery shopping and I'm done with it. And I regularly touch door handles (gasp!)and I get sick once a year. So, no, I won't be buying this product and I really think in most cases it's unneccesary and for people who see all of those cleaning product commercials and freak out when they show the close up of the germs. (Which is exactly what companies want you to do.)
